Want a Discount for the LPI Exam?

Yes, if you are a student of Certificação Linux, you are entitled to 10% to 15% discount on all LPI Exams. It can be the Linux Essentials, the LPIC-101 and LPIC-102 exams for the LPIC-1 certification, or the LPIC-201 and LPIC-202 exams for the LPIC-2 certification, or even the LPIC-3 level exams (mixed environment, virtualization and security).

If you want to know the prices of LPI exams and other certifications, click here. The price you will pay has 10% to 15% discount.

Which LPI exam should I choose?

If you don't know which exam to choose, first you need to ask yourself where you are in your IT career.

If you are starting your career, you are in college, or you know very little about Linux, I recommend you take the Linux Essentials certification because it is an "entry-level" certification, for you to get familiar with Linux. It is also a very desirable certification for software developers. After all, almost everything runs on Linux :)

If you already have some experience with Linux, you have already graduated, or you are already in the job market, I recommend you go straight for the LPIC-1 certification, because it is recommended for those who already have some background, and precisely for that reason, want to go far.

But I want the LPIC-3 virtualization certification right away, can I do it?

HUmmm... unfortunately not. LPIC-1, LPIC-2 and LPIC-3 certifications are progressive. So, to reach level 3, you first need to pass the LPIC-1 exams, and then LPIC-2.

Do I need to take the Linux Essentials to take LPIC-1?

No. You can directly take the LPIC-1 certification.

And do I need to take both LPIC-1 or LPIC-2 exams on the same day?

Also no. I don't even recommend it. A 10-day gap is enough to breathe and prepare again for the challenge.

Wait... but BEFORE requesting your discount, you need to have an LPI-ID

Yes... to request your discount as a Certificação Linux student, you need an LPI-ID.

But, what is an LPI-ID?

The LPI ID (Linux Professional Institute Identification) is mandatory and without it you cannot take the exam. It is the number that identifies you in the LPI system.

I understand... And how do I get an LPI-ID?

To create your LPI-ID is very simple. You access the LPI website, and then click on Sign Up (or Register - if in English) in the menu at the top of the site:

Fill out the LPI form, with your details:

It is very important, when generating your LPI-ID, that you enter your name exactly as it appears on your civil registry, ID, driver's license or passport. This will be the name printed on your certificate when you pass the exam(s):

I've already created my LPI-ID, how do I request my 15% discount on LPI exams?

If you are our student, access our learning platform, then click on Dashboard. If you are not our student yet, choose one of the courses and enroll today.

After clicking on Dashboard, choose the option to open the discount request form:

After filling out the form, you must wait until your coupon is ready. This process can take 1 to 2 days.

I registered, and now?

You will receive an email from [email protected] asking you to click on an address from the LPI website. This is a unique address that enables you to receive your voucher discount. If this email didn't arrive, check your spam folder.

After clicking on the link in the email, you need to accept the Certificação Linux invitation.

Certificação Linux invitation accepted, and now?

Once the invitation is accepted, you need to log in at https://people.lpi.org/login and use your LPI access credentials. These credentials can be the email you registered with LPI, or your LPI-ID, along with your password.

Once you have accessed the LPI portal, click on VOUCHERS:

Then, click on COUPONS and choose the discount coupon available to you. Copy the numeric code, as you will need it to apply the discount when paying for your exam:

I copied the discount code to buy the LPI exam, and now?

This numeric code you copied is used to purchase the VOUCHER for the exam. So now click on VOUCHERS, just above COUPONS.

How do I choose which LPI exam I want to take?

Now you need to choose the TYPE of exam you want to take:

There are 2 types of exams:

  • Essentials Exam Voucher: this voucher is for you to purchase the exam for the Linux Essentials Certification.
  • Professional Exam Voucher: in this option you purchase the vouchers for the exams of LPIC-1, LPIC-2, and LPIC-3 certifications.

Your 15% discount applies to any of the exams

After you've chosen the exam you want to purchase, click on ADD TO CART:

When do I apply my LPI discount coupon?

Enter the discount code and click on APPLY. We recommend purchasing exams separately if you're scheduling, for example, the LPIC-101 and LPIC-102 exams for the LPIC-1 certification.

Right after applying a valid discount code, you'll see that the discount amount is applied to the exam price:

15% discount on the LPI exam

Great, I got my discount, now I just need to pay?

Yes, to pay, click on CHECKOUT and then the CREDIT CARD option. For now, to purchase your exam, you'll need an International credit card.

I don't have an international credit card, what now?

If you don't have an international card, I recommend opening an account at Banco Inter. They offer a digital account with no fees, you open your account through your phone, and after opening your account, you transfer or deposit money into the account.

For the Inter card to be released, make an investment in a CDB with the amount you need for the card limit. You can use this invested amount later to pay the bill. With this, they release the international credit card function with the same limit as your investment. Account opening and card and limit approval are subject to the bank's analysis.

I've recommended this method to several people and it worked great.

I managed to pay for the exam, and now?

After paying for your exam on the LPI website, they will provide you with a VOUCHER, which is a code starting with the letters "LP" followed by numbers. Keep this code safe, as this is what you'll use to schedule the exam on the Pearson VUE website.

How long do I have to schedule exams?

Be aware of your voucher's expiration date. Typically it expires 1 (one) year after the purchase date. The expiration date of the voucher will be the maximum date you can schedule your exam. Example: if your voucher expires on 12/23/2021, you can schedule and take your exam until 12/23/2021. In this example, nothing can be scheduled after 12/23/2021, which will be the last available day in the exam scheduling calendar.

Can I use the same code/voucher for more than one exam?

No. Each discount coupon allows a discount to purchase one voucher, and a voucher can be used to pay for only one exam. If you want to schedule two exams (for example 101 and 102), you must repeat this process twice.

How do I schedule my LPI exam?

Once you have the LPxxxxxxxx voucher issued by the LPI website, you now need to access and create an account on the PearsonVue website.

In the box, right on the home page, type "LPI" to find the Linux Professional Institute:

I don't have a Pearson VUE account yet, how do I create one?

After selecting LPI, you need to log in with your Pearson VUE credentials or create an account. If you already have an account, you can skip directly to the Dashboard. If you don't have one yet, continue and click on CREATE ACCOUNT.

How to create an account on Pearson VUE:

After clicking on CREATE ACCOUNT, you need to fill out the registration form. To start, you need your LPI-ID again:

After pasting your LPI-ID, enter your name exactly as it appears on your government-issued ID (RG, CNH, Passport, etc). If your name is different in your ID registration, you may not be able to take the exam, especially for people who change their last name after getting married or divorced.

Confirm your email, as this is how you will receive a copy of your exam transcripts:

After completing your registration, choose your username and a password to access the Pearson VUE website to schedule your future exams:

I already have an account on Pearson Vue or I already created my account, and now, how do I schedule the LPI exam?

Once you have accessed or created your account on PearsonVue, you will land on the Dashboard to choose which exam you want from the available exams menu.

If you already have an exam scheduled, it will appear in the "View an upcoming test" section.

To schedule a new exam, click on VIEW EXAMS:

Can I take my LPI exam online?

Some exams from the LPI (Linux Professional Institute) can be taken online. For this, you need a computer with a microphone and camera, available on any good laptop.

The exams that are ONLINE have the code ending with the letter "v", such as 010-160v, 101-500v. The first code "010" or "101" indicates the exam code. The second code "160" or "500" indicates the exam version. And the "v", you already know. :)

Which LPI exams are available in Portuguese?

The answer to this question depends on whether you will take the exams at a Pearson VUE center, or online, remotely. See the following table:

ExamOnline (v)Vue Center
Linux Essentials 010-160Portuguese and EnglishPortuguese and English
LPIC-1 (exams 101-500 and 102-500)Portuguese and EnglishPortuguese and English
LPIC-2 (exams (201-450 and 202-450)EnglishPortuguese and English
LPIC-3 (all)No online availableEnglish
DevOps (700-100)No online availableEnglish

It is important that you choose an exam that is the same type you purchased the voucher for on the LPI website. So if you purchased a Linux Essentials type exam, you can only use that voucher to waive the payment at Pearson VUE for the Linux Essentials exams (010-160).

What documents do I need to present for the LPI exam?

On exam day you must present 02 (TWO) valid documents (check the expiration date!!), issued by an authority in your country, that contain your name in a readable form, have your signature, and have your photo. If your ID has a photo of you as a child, you'd better update your document.

How much time do I have to arrive or present myself in advance for the LPI exam?

You must arrive or present yourself online at least 15 minutes before the exam.

I arrived late, what now?

The tolerance time is 15 minutes after the exam start time. If you arrived after that, you lose your exam, and there is no refund of the amount paid. Don't be late.

Can I bring water to the test, candy and some cookies for the LPI exam?

Nahnahninanão. Neither at the Pearson VUE exam nor at the remote exam are water or snacks allowed. Very rare reports of examiners who let you bring in water with an unlabeled bottle. But that's not the rule and don't expect it.

And what about my cell phone, my watch, etc? It's worse than an airport, friend!

No personal items are allowed. At the Pearson VUE center they will give you a locker for you to put your cell phone, watch, gold chains, earrings, etc. There was an exam where they asked me to even take off my wedding ring, empty all my pockets, and even lift the hem of my pants. Once they asked to even check my glasses to see if there was anything hidden in them. Worse than an airport. :-/

Can I have paper to write something down during the LPI exam?

No. If you take the exam at a Vue center, you will get a plastic whiteboard, and a marker that writes on the board and erases. No paper goes in or out. At the remote exam you can't even have that.

How is the LPI online exam?

In the online exam you can take the test from home or office. It is important to follow these guidelines:

  • The proctor, as the person who administers the test is called, is an English speaker (or something like that if it's someone from India, Pakistan or another country heavy with an accent). If you don't speak English, don't take the Online test;
  • Have a computer with a decent processor. The exam environment may get slow sometimes;
  • Choose a quiet place, with as little noise as possible;
  • Only you can be in the bedroom or living room;
  • You will need to use the computer's webcam, built-in microphone and speakers;
  • You cannot use headphones, watch, jewelry, nothing, and will have to show your hands and arms without any long-sleeved shirt or sweatshirt;
  • Connect your computer to your internet preferably using a cable; The exam has been known to drop over wifi;
  • There cannot be anything - absolutely nothing - on the table besides the computer;
  • There cannot be anything within reach of your arms;
  • You cannot chew gum, candy or smoke;
  • You will have to film the entire room, and even under the table - sometimes more than once;
  • You cannot use an external keyboard and monitor - if it's a notebook;
  • Lock the door of your bedroom or living room. If someone shows up during the exam, they will interrupt and void your exam;
  • Avoid staring into empty space, up, down - they may think you're cheating from who knows where;
  • Don't read the questions out loud, don't even move your lips while reading. They may think you're "blowing" answers to someone;
  • Look at the computer and only at the computer. Anything "suspicious" or "different" they may question you or stop your exam. I've "looked to the side and down" to think, and the proctor stopped my exam to question me and ask to see the environment again and even scolded me;
  • They may - out of nowhere - stop your exam and ask to see the room again, or question you about something. It's normal;

If this kind of "surveillance" makes you nervous, and if you are already vaccinated against Covid-19, look for a nearby Vue Center. It's simpler, they'll let you take the exam in peace and it's much less stressful.

How do I know if my computer can run the LPI exam?

Pearson VUE provides a system test so you can see if your computer meets the minimum requirements for the exam software.

Can I take the LPI exam on Linux?

Eeeehhhhh... No. Pearson VUE only offers the exam for Windows 10 64-bit and Mac OS 10.13 and above.

And if I need to, how do I reschedule my LPI exam?

It is possible to reschedule your LPI exam, as long as you do it through the Pearson VUE website with 01 (one) business day before the exam date.

I won the lottery, and I want to cancel my exam, is it possible?

Yes, it is possible to cancel your exam and get reimbursed, as long as you request it through the Pearson VUE website at least 01 (one) business day before the exam. But if you used a voucher generated by LPI to pay for the exam on Pearson VUE, consult LPI's policy.

How to choose the language of the LPI exam?

After selecting the exam, you must select the exam language. Pay attention to the available language options depending on the exam and the form of delivery (at the Pearson Vue center or online).

I want to take the exam at a Pearson VUE Center, where can I do it?

Based on your address registration information, the Pearson VUE website will show the available exam centers for LPI exams closest to you. You can choose another location or city using the box at the top of the page.

Generally in large urban centers, you may find more than one option for the exam center. But be aware that the system may show centers in nearby cities (or not!).

I chose the LPI exam location, how do I choose the exam date?

Once the exam location is defined, you can choose which available day you want to take the exam:

Available dates may differ at different exam centers.

Choose the time for your LPI exam

Once you have chosen a date, scroll down to choose the available time for the exam on that particular date:

How long does an LPI exam take?

Depending on the exam, you will have 60 to 90 minutes to complete the exam. The Linux Essentials exam lasts a maximum of 60 minutes and all others 90 minutes maximum.

How much time do I have for each LPI question?

In a simple calculation, you have 1 minute and 30 seconds for each question, with no time to review the exam.

In the exam it is possible to mark questions and review before finishing, but you have to do that within the exam time. So, you actually have less than 1 and a half minutes for each question.

How to apply your LPI voucher on Pearson Vue?

After selecting the day and time of the exam, you need to confirm the details, such as exam code, chosen language and exam center (location):

With everything just right and perfect, it's time to use the LPI voucher to pay for the exam. Simply paste the code generated by the LPI website that starts with "LP" in the "Voucher/Promotion Code:" field.

If the code is correct, the exam fee will be waived and you can confirm your exam registration.

After that, just study hard.

How many exams do I have to take to become LPI certified?

Depending on the certification, 01 exam or 02 exams, namely:

  • Linux Essentials - one exam
  • LPIC-1 - two exams, 101 and 102
  • LPIC-2 - two exams, 201 and 202
  • LPIC-3 - one specialty exam, 300 or 303 or 304
  • DevOps Tools Engineer - one exam, 701 (+ LPIC-1 or equivalent to the recommended OS)
  • BSD Specialist - one exam, 702

How many points do I need to pass the LPI exam?

As of April 1, 2009, all exam weights for LPIC exams were standardized to 60 weights.

Each LPI exam is scored on a scale from 200 to 800, with a passing score of 500. Since exam questions vary in difficulty, the number of correct answers needed to achieve the passing score of 500 will depend on the exact combination of questions in the exam you take.

I took the exam, when do I receive my results?

You will receive your results and a score report immediately after the exam. Pearson VUE will transfer your exam results to the Linux Professional Institute within 24 hours and, if you meet the certification requirements, your certificate will be issued.

At this point, you can download a PDF copy of your certificate from your lpi.org account.

The physical certificate will arrive by mail in 4 to 6 weeks. (Note: physical certificates are not issued for Linux Essentials).
