Monitor Your Network and Sleep Peacefully
LinuxMonitoring
Nagios is a monitoring system that has become very popular among small businesses. It is very common in Internet service providers, educational institutions, government agencies, health institutions, and financial institutions. Previously called NetSaint, Nagios was developed by Ethan Gelstad and refined by several collaborators. Nagios is an Open Source computer network monitoring system that allows detected problems to be corrected quickly. It was designed for use with the Linux operating system, but can also work on Unix-based systems. Want to know more about Nagios? Follow along in today's post!
How Nagios Works?
Nagios runs periodic checks on the resources and services specified by the network administrator. Resources that can be monitored include memory usage, hard disk usage, microprocessor load, and the number of processes running on the system. Services that can be monitored include the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3), Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and other common network protocols. The program can also monitor environmental variables, such as temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure in conjunction with appropriate environmental measurement hardware.Universal Monitoring
You want to implement a Linux server monitoring solution, network equipment, another for hardware, right? You need a common monitoring solution for all your IT systems and services. Nagios will provide a good monitoring system that includes plugins to monitor various services and devices. For example, it can monitor: Operating systems such as Linux and Windows, system resources such as CPU, hard disk, swap, and network equipment such as switches, routers, VPNs, and firewalls, among others.Open Source Solution
Since you are exposing all your systems in a single monitoring software, you need to make sure you can trust it. Open Source solutions such as Nagios are usually exhaustively tested and reviewed by the web community to avoid any potential security issues.Follow-up Reports
Nagios is capable of generating various follow-up reports for network administrators and users. These reports can be daily, weekly, monthly, or a system performance analysis over a custom date range containing various monitoring statistics.Easy to Learn and Use
Nagios has an easy-to-use web dashboard. The web dashboard provides overall system health, detects problems, and issues alerts for all systems on the network. An authorization system allows the administrator to restrict access if needed. For efficient learning, it is important to train the entire team on the use of Nagios. The system offers a monitoring solution that is easy to implement and learn, because for a monitoring system to be efficient, you should not spend weeks trying to figure out how to make the software work successfully.
